The hardware and software requirements for installing WebSphere Portal 6.0 in a windows environment are outlined below.
Hardware Requirements
- Processor:
- Minimum requirement – Pentium processor with 800 Mhz or above.
- Production Environment – Pentium 4 processor with 1.4 Ghz or above.
- Memory (RAM)
- Minimum Requirement - 2 GB
- Production Environment - 4 GB
- Disk Space - Websphere Portal and Cloudscape together requires 2.4 GB. An additional 750 MB has to be available for Temp Directory.
- File System - NTFS is recommended. Ensure enough disk space is available if using FAT32 file system.
- Network Adapter: network adapter such as Ethernet ot Token ring is required.
Software Requirement
- Operating System
- Windows™ 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Service Pack 4
- Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1a or Service Pack 2 (for development and test purposes only)
- Windows 2003 Standard Edition with Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 1
- Database - IBM Cloudscape version 5.1(Comes along with WebSphere Application Server).
- Web Browsers
- Internet Explorer V6.0 Service Pack 1 (Service Pack 2 for Microsoft™ Windows XP)
- Firefox V1.5 or above
- Mozilla V1.7
- Netscape Communicator V8.1
- Apple Safari 2.0 (limited support)
Note:
1. Web browser support varies portlet.
2. If WebSphere Portal is installed on IPv6, then all browsers that access it must also have IPv6.
3. Due to incompatibilities of CSS and JavaScript implementations in Netscape, there are inconsistencies when Netscape is used with Document Manager.

Step 16:The installation process will proceed and the log information can be checked by clicking the Open button.

Step 11 : In the “Install Business Process Support”, select “Do not install WebSphere Process Server”. Installing WebSphere Process Server will hinder completing the Cluster.

Note: Some platforms do not support WebSphere Process Server and hence WebSphere Portal Installer may not prompt for its installation.
Step 12: Select the path for the installation of Websphere Portal Server. This will by default match the base path of the Websphere Application Server.

Step 13: Enter a username and password for the WPS admin account.

Step 14: Portal can be configured to run as a service, but is not desirable, as it may cause installation and other configuration tasks to fail.In the “Windows Service Definition” screen, enter the Windows Administrator User ID and Password alone.

Note: If the run as a service is selected, the portal server might fail to start within the default timeout period. Portal Server can later be modified to run as a service after increasing the timeout period.
Step 15:A confirmation screen with the details specified would be thrown, review the screen and click Next.

Step 6: Accept the terms of the license and click on Next.

Note: Choose Custom installation when upgrading to a new version of WebSphere Portal on an existing WebSphere Application Server.
Step 8:In the “Installation directory” screen, choose the Directory location where WebSphere Application Server has to be installed.

Step 9:In the “Properties for this instance” screen, verify the cell name, node name and host name of WebSphere Application Server information.

Note:Please do not use cell names or node names longer than 5 characters each (Failure to do so can increase the path name beyond the Windows limit of 256 characters).
Step 10:Present the admin account name and password for the WebSphere Application Server. This is needed for the installation.
